What’s in a name?
We often get asked about the difference between gelato and ice cream – along with gelati, sorbet, and soft serve. They’re all frozen favourites, but each has a unique history, texture, and method of preparation. Let’s scoop into the details!
Ice Cream
Traditional ice cream dates back to Europe in the 1300s. It’s made from:
- cream and milk
- often egg yolk
- sugar
Ice cream has a lighter, fluffier texture because it’s churned quickly, incorporating more air. It also has a higher fat content compared to gelato.
Fun fact: Some commercial ice creams may contain gluten, so it’s always good practice to check the ingredients label for allergens.
Gelato (and Gelati)
Gelato is the Italian word for ice cream, while gelati is simply its plural. First created in Italy, gelato has become loved around the world.
Key differences between gelato and ice cream:
- Contains milk, but typically no egg
- Denser, with less air whipped in
- Lower in fat, but richer in flavour
- Served slightly warmer (around -15°C vs ice cream at -18°C)
This gives gelato its signature creamy, smooth mouthfeel. At No Moo 4U Rockhampton, we even make dairy-free gelato – creamy, delicious, and packed with flavour.
Sorbet
Sorbet is always dairy-free and made from:
- fruit juice or pulp
- sugar
- water
Some traditional recipes use egg whites, but ours do not. Sorbet is light, refreshing, and bursting with fruit flavour. At No Moo 4U Rockhampton, we often use locally grown fruits when available to make our colourful range of sorbets.
Soft Serve
Soft serve is similar to traditional ice cream but prepared and stored differently.
- Served at around -4°C (much warmer than standard ice cream at -18°C)
- Contains more air – up to 40% – giving it that ultra-creamy, fluffy texture
Our No Moo 4U Rockhampton soft serve is smooth, creamy, and just as delicious on the last lick as the first.
The Scoop on the Difference
So, what’s the real difference between gelato and ice cream?
- Ice cream: lighter, higher fat, more air
- Gelato: denser, lower fat, richer flavour, served warmer
Both are delicious – but at No Moo 4U Rockhampton, we also offer sorbets and dairy-free gelato to make sure everyone has a sweet option to enjoy.
